Bi-, tri- or more lingual?

11 Dec

How many languages should one know?

I’ve heard that a lot of people can speak 5-6 langauages.

Some could speak as many as 12-13 languages.

Uhm .. ok, I don’t intend to compete with them, I’m not good at linguistic. [Sometimes, I wonder what am I good at? Is there any? heheh]

Anyway, it just occured to me, I wanted to know more languages with different reasons though.

I want to learn Japanese because uhm I have always been wanting to visit Japan.  Japanese are famous for not willing to speak other langauges, so I just want to be able to survive if I got a chance to travel there.  And, I want to understand their instructions on a lot of cool things too.  Lots of knowledge are hidden behind not so world standard languages, don’t ya think?

Note: by world standard, I mean like at least half of the world population know how to read/write in that language.

Above said, I attended one short Japanese speaking course while I was an undergrad (out of Uni though).  The only things I learned and still remember are Connichiwa, Combanwa, Ohayogosaimus, atashi wa ohnumawa nundeska, etc. (pardon my spelling)

I also want to learn French. I recently develop a passion(?) for pastry, and french pastry is among the best.  So .. uhm .. enough reason??

Ok. I want to visit Paris too.

This year we had Worldcup right?  My friend introduced me to the Italia team.  I was kinda fall in love with the team.  They’re great and turned out they are the champian of the 2006! yay!  So, I guess I’m a permanant Italia supportor. 😛   The only Italian words I know are pizza, spaghetti, cappuccino, espresso, etc.   I need to learn more because I want to visit to Rome, Milan, Vatican City, Florence, and Venice  so it’s good to know some Italian right?

What?  Ok Ok  I admit.  Italian men are good looking too. Maybe, I could chat with ’em while I’m there. 😛

Heheh, some lame reasons I know but oh well, one gotta have some inspiration from some weird things, eh?

Come to think of it, wanting to see the world plays a role here too.

Uhm..I want to visit Greece, Prague, and Vienna too. What languages are they speaking there?  Shoot. I think I’m in trouble now. 😛

PS. Since I put it here now, my (not so secret anymore)plan is giving 5 years(once a week, I guess) for learning each language.  Hope I’d learn a thing or two from each.

    Konnichiwa! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Heheh. I’ve been planning to re-learn my Japanese too! It’s been a while, but I think I can dig some up from the past memory… that and my Chinese… ^^%

As for my French… I gave that up. If I ever need to find myself in Paris, I’ll just try my best to convince S. to come with me. 😛 That should solve all my francais needs. 🙂

I’m not exactly good at linguistic either.. but well…. I guess if you have a strong enough motivation, anything is possible! 😀
